Plum Teak Gold - Bare-Rooted

Plum Teak Gold is an Australian plum variety introduced to New Zealand eight years ago and has since become a huge success in the market. This deciduous fruit tree is celebrated for its large, oval, burgundy fruit with yellow, juicy flesh. The fruit boasts a superb eating quality with an incredibly sweet, syrupy, and slightly aromatic flavor, free of acidity. As the fruit matures the flesh changes from a dull lime green to a light yellow. It matures slowly and holds well on the tree, making it a delightful mid-season treat.

Plum Teak Gold is partially self-fertile but benefits from cross-pollination with varieties such as Omega, Black Doris, or Elephant Heart for enhanced fruit set. Thrives in full sun and prefers well-drained, fertile soil. Mulching with organic matter helps maintain soil moisture and fertility. Pruning should be done in late winter to early spring to maintain its shape and remove any dead or damaged branches.

What is a bare-rooted tree?

Bare-rooted trees are deciduous trees that have been grown in the ground and are dug up when they've become dormant in the winter. The soil is shaken from their roots and they are bundled up with their roots packed in moist material to prevent dehydration during transport.

What are the benefits?

  • Less packaging and plastic waste involved in growing process and transportation.
  • Plant has more root mass as the roots have not been constricted and twisted by a pot.
  • They are easier to carry and plant as they are extremely lightweight.
  • Bare-rooted trees are cheaper as they do not come with soil and pots.
  • Planting bare-rooted trees in the winter follows the natural pattern of the seasons.
