Plum Damson - Bare-Rooted

Plum Damson is renowned for its culinary versatility and robust, tart flavor, making it a favorite for jams, jellies, and preserves. This hardy tree produces small, blue-black plums with a distinctively astringent taste ideal for cooking and baking. It features a compact growth habit, which allows it to fit well in smaller gardens or spaces where a full-sized fruit tree might be too large.

Adaptable to a variety of garden styles, from rustic cottage settings to more structured orchard rows, the Plum Damson thrives in full sun locations with well-drained soil. It is self-fertile, meaning it does not require a pollinator to produce fruit, although fruiting can be enhanced with a companion. For best growth and fruit production, trees should be spaced approximately 3-4m apart. Damson grows to a height of about 6m with a spread of 3m. Great for colder climates.

What is a bare-rooted tree?

Bare-rooted trees are deciduous trees that have been grown in the ground and are dug up when they've become dormant in the winter. The soil is shaken from their roots and they are bundled up with their roots packed in moist material to prevent dehydration during transport. 

What are the benefits? 

• Less packaging and plastic waste involved in growing process and transportation. 
• Plant has more root mass as the roots have not been constricted and twisted by a pot.
• They are easier to carry and plant as they are extremely lightweight.
• Bare-rooted trees are cheaper as they do not come with soil and pots. 
• Planting bare-rooted trees in the winter follows the natural pattern of the seasons.
