Blueberry Nui is a New Zealand-bred blueberry variety known for its exceptionally large, sweet berries and heavy crops. Flowering in mid to late Spring with fruit ripening through mid-Summer, it delivers excellent flavour and firm texture, making it a favourite for fresh eating and preserving. Autumn foliage turns deep red, adding seasonal colour.
Ideal for home orchards, edible borders, or feature planting, it complements lifestyle block, cottage, and productive garden styles.
Plant in full sun with acidic, free-draining soil. Keep the soil evenly moist, particularly during flowering and fruiting. Space plants 1.2–1.5m apart to support strong, healthy growth.
Mature size: Upright and robust, reaching approximately 1.8–2m tall and 1.5m wide.
Trimming: Prune in late winter to early spring while dormant. Remove any dead, damaged, or overcrowded branches to encourage good airflow and maintain an open shape. For mature plants, cut back up to a third of the oldest canes at the base to promote strong, new growth and better fruiting.
Deadheading: Not necessary, but tidy the plant by removing any unpicked or shrivelled berries after harvest to help prevent disease.
Fertilising: Apply a fertiliser formulated for acid-loving plants (e.g., for camellias or rhododendrons) in early spring. A second, lighter application in late summer may be beneficial if the plant appears undernourished. Avoid lime-based products to preserve soil acidity.
Watering: Keep well-watered during the first 1–2 years and in dry conditions, especially during flowering and fruiting. ‘Nui’ produces large berries and benefits from consistent moisture. Mulch with pine bark or other acidic organic matter to retain moisture and suppress weeds.
Pest Control: Generally pest-resistant, though birds are attracted to the large fruit—netting is often necessary during the ripening period. Watch for aphids or scale insects on young shoots and treat with insecticidal soap or horticultural oil if needed.
Disease Management: Ensure soil is well-drained to avoid root rot. In humid conditions, monitor for powdery mildew—look for a white film on the leaves and treat with a sulphur-based fungicide if required. Prune regularly to maintain airflow and reduce fungal risk.
