Betula platyphylla var. japonica, also known as the Japanese White Birch or Asian White Birch, is a beautiful ornamental tree native to Japan. It is a large deciduous tree that typically grows 15-20 metres tall, though it can reach up to 30 metres in ideal conditions. This tree is appreciated for its distinctive, chalky white bark that peels off in horizontal layers, creating an attractive contrast with its dark, glossy green leaves. In the autumn, the leaves turn a vibrant yellow colour, adding a burst of colour to the landscape. This birch tree is quite resilient and can tolerate a variety of soil conditions, though it prefers a well-drained, slightly acidic soil. It thrives best in full sun but can handle some shade. Given its height and elegant silhouette, it makes a striking statement when planted as a specimen tree in larger landscapes, parks, or alongside roadways.
