Magnolia Susan - Bare-Rooted

Magnolia Susan is an enchanting variety of magnolia, known for its stunning purple-red flowers and compact growth habit. This deciduous tree is prized for its unique floral display and manageable size, making it an excellent choice for smaller gardens and urban spaces.

Magnolia Susan is perfect for garden enthusiasts looking to add a splash of colour and elegance to their landscape. Its tulip-shaped, deep purple-red flowers appear in mid to late spring, providing a vibrant focal point in garden designs. This magnolia suits various garden styles, from cottage gardens to formal gardens, and its dark green foliage offers a lovely contrast to the colourful flowers.

This magnolia thrives in areas with full sun to partial shade and prefers well-drained, slightly acidic soil. It is essential to keep the soil consistently moist, especially during dry periods, to ensure healthy growth and abundant flowering. Allow sufficient space for its mature size, typically reaching 3-4 metres in height and 2-3 metres in width, to accommodate its compact, rounded form.

In the garden, Magnolia Susan is best planted in sheltered positions, protected from strong winds that can damage its delicate flowers. It begins to flower from a young age and has a prolonged flowering period from mid to late spring. Its striking purple-red flowers provide a beautiful and lasting display of colour.

What is a bare-rooted tree?

Bare-rooted trees are deciduous trees that have been grown in the ground and are dug up when they've become dormant in the winter. The soil is shaken from their roots and they are bundled up with their roots packed in moist material to prevent dehydration during transport.

What are the benefits?

  • Less packaging and plastic waste involved in growing process and transportation.
  • Plant has more root mass as the roots have not been constricted and twisted by a pot.
  • They are easier to carry and plant as they are extremely lightweight.
  • Bare-rooted trees are cheaper as they do not come with soil and pots.
  • Planting bare-rooted trees in the winter follows the natural pattern of the seasons.
