Magnolia Centennial - Bare-Rooted

Magnolia stellata Centennial, commonly known as Star Magnolia, is a stunning deciduous shrub derived from Magnolia stellata Waterlily, is renowned for its larger, more showy, and fragrant flowers. Flowering in early spring before the leaves unfurl, it produces gorgeous, waterlily-shaped, double flowers with 28 to 33 white petals often flushed with hints of pink, creating a spectacular display.

This magnolia is ideal as a specimen plant or in mixed borders. It thrives in full sun to partial shade and prefers well-drained, slightly acidic, organically rich soil. This variety can tolerate neutral to slightly alkaline soils if moisture retentive. Due to its compact size, it's perfect for cottage gardens, city gardens, and woodland borders

When planting Centennial, space the plants about 3-4m apart to accommodate their mature size and ensure good air circulation. Regular watering is essential, particularly during the establishment period and dry spells. Mulching with organic matter helps maintain soil moisture and fertility. Minimal pruning is required; prune immediately after flowering to avoid removing next year's buds. This magnolia is hardy but is susceptible to late frosts, which may damage flower buds.

Grows with a broadly pyramidal habit up to 4-6m tall and wide.

What is a bare-rooted tree?

Bare-rooted trees are deciduous trees that have been grown in the ground and are dug up when they've become dormant in the winter. The soil is shaken from their roots and they are bundled up with their roots packed in moist material to prevent dehydration during transport.

What are the benefits?

  • Less packaging and plastic waste involved in growing process and transportation.
  • Plant has more root mass as the roots have not been constricted and twisted by a pot.
  • They are easier to carry and plant as they are extremely lightweight.
  • Bare-rooted trees are cheaper as they do not come with soil and pots.
  • Planting bare-rooted trees in the winter follows the natural pattern of the seasons.
