Magnolia Gold Star - Bare-Rooted

Magnolia Gold Star is an award-winning deciduous tree that produces a profusion of fragrant, large, star-shaped flowers in a soft cream-yellow colour. In early to mid-spring, the luminous flowers create a starburst effect on leafless branches. The foliage emerges with attractive bronze-red tones, maturing to medium green as the season progresses.

This hardy tree is best grown in full sun to partial shade in consistently moist, slightly acidic, organically rich, well-drained soils. It can also adapt to neutral to slightly alkaline soils if they are moisture retentive. Magnolia Gold Star is versatile and can thrive in clay, loam, or sandy soils. It is a spectacular specimen plant, perfect for cottage gardens.

To plant Magnolia Gold Star, choose a site with some protection from the wind and partial shade. Avoid dry or soggy soils. Dig a hole about 80cm wide and 60cm deep, half-fill it with a mix of soil, acid compost, and organic matter, and plant the tree without disturbing the roots. Water well after planting and deeply mulch the root area. Regular watering is necessary until the tree is established. Prune after blooming and add a specialised fertiliser each spring to encourage healthy growth and flowering.

Mature size typically reaches 5m tall and 4m wide.

What is a bare-rooted tree?

Bare-rooted trees are deciduous trees that have been grown in the ground and are dug up when they've become dormant in the winter. The soil is shaken from their roots and they are bundled up with their roots packed in moist material to prevent dehydration during transport.

What are the benefits?

  • Less packaging and plastic waste involved in growing process and transportation.
  • Plant has more root mass as the roots have not been constricted and twisted by a pot.
  • They are easier to carry and plant as they are extremely lightweight.
  • Bare-rooted trees are cheaper as they do not come with soil and pots.
  • Planting bare-rooted trees in the winter follows the natural pattern of the seasons.
