Magnolia Deryk - Bare-Rooted

Magnolia Deryk is a striking deciduous tree named in honour of Deryk Lawrence, who, along with his wife Nancy, developed a garden at Otamarakau, south of Te Puke. As part of the first range of hybrids derived from Genie, Deryk features unusually dark, rich velvet red flowers, which can appear almost brick red under certain light conditions. This variety is noted for its tendency to set flowers at the tips, which results in a slower growth rate but ensures a stunning floral display.

This small tree is perfect as a specimen plant in various garden settings, including mixed plantings and cottage gardens. It grows upright with a compact habit, making it suitable for smaller spaces or as a backdrop for other plants. The rich red-purple flowers, which bloom profusely in spring, add vibrant colour to the garden and make Deryk an eye-catching focal point.

Magnolia Deryk thrives in full sun to partial shade and prefers well-drained, slightly acidic soil enriched with organic matter. Regular watering is essential, particularly during the establishment period and dry spells. Mulching helps maintain soil moisture and temperature. Pruning is minimal but should be done immediately after flowering to avoid removing next year's buds. This variety typically grows to about 3-4 metres tall and wide, making it an excellent choice for adding dramatic colour and form to the landscape

What is a bare-rooted tree?

Bare-rooted trees are deciduous trees that have been grown in the ground and are dug up when they've become dormant in the winter. The soil is shaken from their roots and they are bundled up with their roots packed in moist material to prevent dehydration during transport.

What are the benefits?

  • Less packaging and plastic waste involved in growing process and transportation.
  • Plant has more root mass as the roots have not been constricted and twisted by a pot.
  • They are easier to carry and plant as they are extremely lightweight.
  • Bare-rooted trees are cheaper as they do not come with soil and pots.
  • Planting bare-rooted trees in the winter follows the natural pattern of the seasons.
