Magnolia denudata - Bare-Rooted

Magnolia denudata, commonly known as the Yulan magnolia, is a distinguished and ancient flowering tree that has graced gardens for centuries. Originating from central and eastern China, this magnolia is renowned for its early spring display of large, fragrant, creamy-white flowers. The flowers appear before the leaves, creating a striking contrast against the bare branches. Ideal for use as a specimen tree, it can also be incorporated into mixed borders or used as a backdrop for smaller shrubs and perennials.

The Yulan magnolia thrives in full sun to partial shade and prefers a sheltered position away from strong winds to protect its delicate flowers. It is best suited to well-drained, fertile, and slightly acidic soil, benefiting from mulching to retain soil moisture and regulate temperature. When planting, ensure enough space to accommodate its mature width, spacing multiple trees at least 4-6 metres apart. At maturity, it can reach heights of about 8-12 metres with a spread of 4-8 metres. This tree's majestic presence and early spring flowers make it a cherished addition to any garden, promising a spectacular display as the seasons transition from summer to autumn.

What is a bare-rooted tree?

Bare-rooted trees are deciduous trees that have been grown in the ground and are dug up when they've become dormant in the winter. The soil is shaken from their roots and they are bundled up with their roots packed in moist material to prevent dehydration during transport. 

What are the benefits? 

• Less packaging and plastic waste involved in growing process and transportation. 
• Plant has more root mass as the roots have not been constricted and twisted by a pot.
• They are easier to carry and plant as they are extremely lightweight.
• Bare-rooted trees are cheaper as they do not come with soil and pots. 
• Planting bare-rooted trees in the winter follows the natural pattern of the seasons.
